Details

Sebastian Chnelik discovered that wheel incorrectly handled
certain file names when validated against a regex expression.
An attacker could possibly use this issue to cause a
denial of service.

Update instructions

The problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following package versions:

Ubuntu 22.10

• python3-wheel - 0.37.1-2ubuntu0.22.10.1

Ubuntu 22.04

• python3-wheel - 0.37.1-2ubuntu0.22.04.1

Ubuntu 20.04

• python3-wheel - 0.34.2-1ubuntu0.1

Ubuntu 18.04

• python-wheel - 0.30.0-0.2ubuntu0.1
• python3-wheel - 0.30.0-0.2ubuntu0.1

Ubuntu 14.04

• python-wheel - 0.24.0-1~ubuntu1.1+esm1
  Available with Ubuntu Pro
• python3-wheel - 0.24.0-1~ubuntu1.1+esm1
  Available with Ubuntu Pro

In general, a standard system update will make all the necessary changes.
If installed, python-pip and python3-pip will also need to be updated.
